Abaloparatide (Tymlos)

Abaloparatide is an FDA-approved hormone-related peptide. This daily injectable high-potency medication is used to treat osteoporosis by stimulating new bone formation. The primary benefits include reducing the risk of fractures and increasing bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women and men with osteoporosis who are at high risk of fracture with a history of fractures or multiple risk factors.

About Abaloparatide

  • What it is: Tymlos is a synthetic analog of human parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP), which helps regulate calcium and phosphate levels in the blood.

  • How it works: It acts on the PTH1 receptor to stimulate osteoblasts, the cells responsible for bone formation. By stimulating new bone growth, Tymlos increases bone strength and density.

  • How it is administered: Tymlos is a daily, self-administered subcutaneous (under the skin) injection using a prefilled pen.

The importance of maintaining healthy bone density

Bone is living tissue that is constantly being broken down and replaced. Osteoporosis occurs when the creation of new bone doesn't keep up with the loss of old bone.

Osteoporosis causes bones to become weak and brittle — so brittle that a fall or even mild stress such as bending over or coughing can cause a break. Osteoporosis-related breaks most commonly occur in the hip, wrist or spine.

Osteoporosis affects men and women but women, especially post-menopausal women, are at highest risk.

New Century prescribes two key medications to treat osteoporosis,  alendronate and teriparatide, proven build new bone. Your New Century board-certified provider will determine which treatment is best for you.
