Finasteride
Finasteride works for many women by slowing hair loss and increasing hair density for pattern baldness, but it must be taken long-term to maintain its effects. It works by blocking the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which contributes to hair loss. Finasteride is generally prescribed for post-menopausal women.
Potential benefits
-
Androgenetic alopecia: Studies suggest finasteride may increase hair density and reduce shedding in women with this condition.
-
High androgen levels: Finasteride may be particularly effective for women with elevated androgen levels due to conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
-
Stabilized hair loss: In some studies, women have reported that finasteride stabilized their hair loss, suggesting a reduction in further thinning.
-
Postmenopausal women: Studies have shown more favorable results in postmenopausal women with hair loss. In some cases higher doses (2.5 mg to 5 mg) have yielded better results.

Considerations
-
Pregnancy Risk: Finasteride is a pregnancy Category X medication and can cause birth defects, particularly in male fetuses.
-
Not for Childbearing Age: Due to the risk of birth defects, finasteride is rarely prescribed to women of reproductive age, and women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception if considering its use.
Potential Side Effects
-
Common Side Effects: Some women have reported side effects such as headache, irregular menstruation, mood changes, and a decreased sex drive.
-
Topical Finasteride: A topical formulation of finasteride has also been studied, potentially reducing systemic exposure and side effects, though more research is needed.
