Minoxodil/Finasteride Compound
For men with male pattern baldness, a compounded topical formulation of minoxidil and finasteride ais considered more effective than either medication used alone. The compound works by tackling hair loss through two different mechanisms: finasteride reduces hair-thinning hormones, while minoxidil increases blood flow to the follicles.
How the compound works
Minoxidil and finasteride target different aspects of male pattern baldness, creating a synergistic effect when combined.
-
Finasteride: This is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, meaning it blocks the enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). In genetically susceptible men, DHT binds to hair follicles, causing them to shrink and stop producing hair. By lowering DHT levels, finasteride can halt this process.
-
Minoxidil: This is a vasodilator that widens the blood vessels in the scalp, increasing blood flow to the hair follicles. This delivers more oxygen and nutrients to the follicles and extends their growth phase, leading to thicker and healthier hair.
Benefits
-
Superior efficacy: Multiple studies show that the combined use of finasteride and minoxidil is more effective for regrowing hair than either drug on its own.
-
Reduced systemic side effects: Topical application is a popular alternative to oral finasteride because it can decrease the amount of the drug that enters the bloodstream, potentially lowering the risk of sexual side effects.
-
Convenient application: Compounded topical formulations, often available as a gel or spray, can be more convenient to use than applying two separate products.
-
Good for long-term maintenance: Some research indicates that men who switch from oral finasteride to a topical minoxidil-finasteride compound can maintain their hair density over the long term.
