PT-141(Bremelanotide)

PT-141, known by the generic name bremelanotide, an injectable medication, works in the brain to enhance sexual desire and arousal. The medication is approved by the FDA as Vyleesi for premenopausal women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD).  The drug works by activating melanocortin receptors in the brain to increase sexual desire.

How it works

Unlike other sexual dysfunction treatments that affect the vascular system, bremelanotide influences sexual desire centrally through the nervous system. It activates melanocortin receptors in the brain, which play a role in various physiological processes, including sexual arousal. This can lead to increased sexual desire and physical sexual responses.

Benefits:

  • Boosts sexual desire: Bremelanotide activates receptors in the brain associated with sexual arousal. This can help restore a woman's natural libido.

  • Increases sexual arousal and satisfaction: can heighten sensitivity and responsiveness to touch, leading to more fulfilling sexual experiences and stronger orgasms.

  • Reduces sexual distress: For women with HSDD, the lack of sexual desire causes significant personal distress. Bremelanotide has been shown to reduce this distress, improving a woman's overall sense of well-being.

  • Improves relationships: Reconnecting with a partner on an intimate level can strengthen emotional bonds and improve relationship satisfaction.

  • Rapid and flexible dosing: Unlike a daily pill, bremelanotide is injected into the thigh or abdomen about 45 minutes before anticipated sexual activity. The effects can last up to 72 hours, allowing for spontaneity.

  • Non-hormonal mechanism: The medication is not hormone-based. This is beneficial for women who cannot or do not wish to use hormonal therapies.

How it is administered

Bremelanotide is a self-administered injection into the abdomen or thigh.

It is typically taken at least 45 minutes before anticipated sexual activity.

Important considerations

  • Who should use it: The FDA approval for bremelanotide is specifically for premenopausal women with HSDD.

  • Cardiovascular health: Because of its effect on blood pressure and heart rate, bremelanotide should not be used by individuals with uncontrolled high blood pressure or known cardiovascular disease.

  • Treatment effectiveness: Patients who do not see improvement in sexual desire after eight weeks should stop using the medication.
