Ramelteon

Ramelteon is a melatonin receptor agonist that mimics the effects of melatonin, a hormone the body naturally produces to regulate sleep and the circadian rhythm. Ramelteon has been shown to be more potent than non-prescription melatonin in promoting sleep and has a longer-lasting effect.

  • No known potential for abuse or dependence. This makes it a safer long-term option.

  • No rebound insomnia or withdrawal symptoms

  • No residual "hangover" effects, daytime sedation, or cognitive impairment after taking ramelteon.

Usage and effectiveness

  • Ramelteon is typically taken once daily about 30 minutes before bedtime and only when you are ready to go to sleep. It should not be taken with or right after a meal.

  • It is effective at reducing the time it takes to fall asleep.

  • For best results, it should be used for short periods, as its effectiveness may diminish over time with nightly use.
